昭和二十年四月。剣部隊は松山基地から鹿屋基地へと拠点を移した。その緒戦、菅野直大尉率いる戦闘301は「菊水二号作戦」における突撃路啓開任務を遂行。人間爆弾「桜花」が戦果を上げるなど、剣部隊の任務は一応の成功を収めていた。一方米軍は「特攻」に警戒心を強め、九州地区の飛行場を無力化する作戦へと舵をきる。鹿屋基地に重爆撃機・B29が襲来するのは時間の問題だった。
